The Legacy of the Whistle
The whistle has existed for tens of thousands of years, leaving lasting impacts on humanity from its first creation. The earliest whistles carved out of bone were essential in creating musical traditions that brought early humans together and formed strong social bonds, which would give them the ability to work together to gain the advantage in a hostile world and survive as a species. Whistles further developed many communities’ rituals and religious ceremonies later, and they were even buried with higher-class people as a sign of status.
Whistles have connected with many of Big History’s thresholds throughout not only human history, but the history of the universe. The elements whistles are made of were created in stars, and the first whistle was created as a product of collectively learning and refining a carving until it could produce a sound.
Even today, the whistle continues to impact human history in more practical ways. They are used as a sign of authority and to call large groups to attention, helping organize large crowds, and can even save lives when used by police officers to alert bystanders of criminals and engineers to alert people on railroad tracks of an incoming train. Another impact the whistle has that continues to grow is its symbol for freedom of information by whistleblowing.
Whistles are also more global than ever before一they are used all around the world to demonstrate authority, as well as whistleblowing in governments worldwide. Furthermore, with the invention of mass production, metal whistles are both made and sold in their own countries and shipped around the globe. The reason that whistles are so widely made is because of their fairly common and simple materials, as well as their huge demand from consumers around the world and their huge supply because they are made with only one alloy of metal.
Almost everyone has heard a whistle, and although we may not take notice of them, they are actually instruments with an extremely complex history and an extremely large impact. Although the modern metal whistle can be traced back to elements forged inside of a dying star, many types of whistles have existed throughout human history. The music of the whistle has changed humans’ cultures and strengthened their communities, and in modern times, their multitude of practical uses creates a safer, freer, and more organized society.

The whistle is used in many situations to show leadership, and one of many examples is the Boatswain Pipe traditionally used to command naval soldiers. This type of whistle has left a legacy of strength and organization in the armed forces, and all who use it show utmost authority, no matter the circumstances. Because of the whistle’s use in organizing groups of people, its sound is always given respect.
'Think how important music is for us,' Conard said. ‘Whether it's at church, a party, or just for fun, you can see how powerful music can be. People often hear a song and cry, or feel great joy or sorrow. All of those kinds of emotions help bond people together’ (Owen). |
In comparison to the bone flutes from which metal whistles evolved, the ancient flute was a much more musical instrument. However, these ancient instruments left a lasting impact on human culture, making music an essential part of all of our lives. It brought people together and created strong social connections thousands of years ago, and this impact continues to last today.
